These steps assume the Yoast SEO plugin (the most widely used WordPress SEO plugin). If you use Rank Math or All in One SEO instead, the fields are in the same place — just under that plugin's box below the editor instead of Yoast's.
These steps use Shopify's built-in SEO fields — no app required. The same "Search engine listing preview" panel appears on products, pages, collections, and blog posts.
1
Title tag
This is what shows as the clickable headline in Google search results.
01
Open the page or post in your WordPress dashboard editor.
02
Scroll below the content to the Yoast SEO box and click the "SEO" tab.
03
Find the "SEO title" field and replace it with a clear, specific title under 60 characters.
04
Click Update to publish the change.
2
Meta description
The summary text under your title in search results. A clear one improves click-through rate.
01
In the same Yoast SEO box, find the "Meta description" field.
02
Write 150–160 characters describing the page. Include your main keyword naturally — don't force it.
03
Click Update.
3
H1 heading structure
Every page should have exactly one H1 that matches what the page is about.
01
Open the page in the WordPress block editor.
02
Click your main heading block, then check the block toolbar — it should be set to "Heading 1."
03
Only your page title should be H1. Set every other heading on the page to "Heading 2" or lower.
04
Click Update.
4
Canonical tag
Tells Google which version of a page is the "real" one, avoiding duplicate-content issues.
01
In the Yoast SEO box, click the "Advanced" tab.
02
Leave "Canonical URL" blank unless this page duplicates another page on your site — if it does, paste the URL of the original page here.
03
Click Update.
5
Image alt text
Describes images to search engines and screen readers — and can surface your images in Google Image search.
01
Click the image in your page, or open it from the Media Library.
02
In the right-hand panel, find "Alternative Text" and describe the image in a few plain words.
03
Click Update / Save.
6
Thin content
Pages with very little text struggle to rank — Google needs enough content to understand what the page is about.
01
Open the page in the block editor.
02
Add more relevant, useful text — enough to fully answer what a visitor searching for this page wants to know.
03
Click Update.
1

3
H1 heading structure
Every page should have exactly one H1 that matches what the page is about.
01
Your product, page, or post's "Title" field is rendered as the page's H1 by your theme automatically — you don't need to set this separately.
02
In the body content editor, avoid adding another "Heading 1" — if a heading style is needed there, use "Heading 2" or lower from the Formatting menu.
03
Click Save.
4
Canonical tag
Tells Google which version of a page is the "real" one, avoiding duplicate-content issues.
01
Nothing to do here in most cases — Shopify's themes generate canonical tags automatically for products, pages, collections, and blog posts.
02
If our audit still flags a canonical issue on a Shopify page, it's almost always coming from the theme's code rather than an admin setting — worth a message to your theme developer or Shopify Support rather than something to fix yourself.
5
Image alt text
Describes images to search engines and screen readers — and can surface your images in Google Image search.
01
Open the product, page, or post, and click the image in the "Media" section.
02
On the image preview, click Add alt text and describe the image in a few plain words.
03
Click Save alt text.
