How Backlinks Actually Work (and Why Most “Link Building” Doesn't)
Short answer: A backlink is another website linking to yours, and it functions as a vote of confidence in Google's ranking algorithm — but only when it's earned, from a real site, because your content is genuinely worth linking to. Most services selling “link building” are actually selling link placement on low-quality or unrelated sites, which does little or nothing for rankings and can carry real risk.
Why backlinks matter at all
Search engines use backlinks as one signal, among many, that other sites consider your content trustworthy or useful enough to reference. A link from a relevant, reputable site carries far more weight than ten links from unrelated, low-quality ones.
What legitimate link building actually looks like
Genuine outreach: finding a real site owner, journalist, or blogger for whom your content is actually relevant, and pitching it directly. Some outreach attempts succeed and some don't — that's normal, and any service promising a guaranteed number of backlinks per month is promising something nobody can actually control. Content worth linking to — original research, genuinely useful tools or guides, expert commentary people would cite even if no one asked them to — and digital PR, getting covered by journalists as part of a normal story rather than a paid placement, round out the legitimate approaches.
What to be wary of
Reciprocal link exchanges (“link to me and I'll link to you”) are flagged by Google as a manipulative link scheme and can actively hurt rankings if overused — we've written about this risk in more detail separately. Private blog networks and paid link farms exist mainly to sell links, and Google actively hunts for them — getting caught linking to or from one can trigger a manual penalty. Directory spam, submitting your site to hundreds of low-relevance directories, does little for rankings and can look manipulative at volume.
A realistic quality bar
One link from a genuinely relevant, moderately authoritative site is worth more than fifty links from random low-quality domains. If a link-building pitch focuses entirely on volume (“500 backlinks!”) rather than relevance, that's the tell.
