Google Business Profile: The Complete Setup Guide

JumpSEO Team · 8 min read

Short answer: Claim and verify your Google Business Profile, then fill in every field completely and accurately — category, hours, service area or address, phone, website, and photos — before doing anything else in local SEO. It's free, it's the single highest-leverage local SEO task that exists, and an incomplete profile is the most common reason a legitimate local business doesn't show up in map results.

Claiming and verifying

Search your business name on Google and click “Own this business?”, or create a new listing at business.google.com if none exists, then complete verification — usually a postcard to your business address, sometimes phone or email for eligible categories. Postcard verification can take days to weeks, so start it early even if you're not ready to touch anything else yet.

The fields that actually matter

Primary category is one of the strongest local ranking factors, more so than most business owners expect — choose the single most accurate one for what you do. Use a service-area radius or a storefront address depending on how you actually operate. Keep hours current, including holidays; inaccurate hours hurt trust with both Google and customers. Link your website to a page that matches the profile's category, not just your homepage. Add real photos of your actual location, team, and work — profiles with more genuine photos consistently get more engagement.

Posts, Q&A, and messaging

Google Business Profile lets you publish short updates and answer questions directly on your listing. Neither is mandatory, but an active profile with a couple of recent posts signals to both Google and customers scanning results that the business is actually operating.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

Keyword-stuffing the business name field (“Joe's Plumbing - Best Plumber Emergency 24/7”) violates Google's guidelines and risks suspension, not just a lost ranking boost. So does creating multiple listings for one location, or a listing for an address you don't actually operate from.

After setup

This is a maintenance task, not a one-time task — keep hours accurate, respond to reviews, and update photos periodically. See our local SEO starter guide for which of these ongoing tasks are worth outsourcing versus doing yourself.
