Competitor SEO Analysis: How to Find What's Actually Working for Them

JumpSEO Team · 7 min read

Short answer: Competitor SEO analysis means figuring out which keywords a competitor ranks for that you don't, which pages on their site earn the most traffic and links, and what content or technical choices are driving that — then deciding which of those gaps are actually worth closing for your business, not copying everything they do.

Start with keyword gaps, not a general impression

The most useful starting question isn't “what is my competitor doing” in general — it's “what specific search terms is my competitor ranking for that I'm not.” That's a concrete, actionable list, versus a vague impression of their strategy.

Look at which of their pages actually earn traffic and links

Not every page on a competitor's site matters equally. A handful of pages usually account for most of their organic traffic and most of their backlinks — identifying those tells you what's actually working versus what's just present on their site.

Check their technical fundamentals

Page speed, mobile usability, structured data, and site structure are all things you can check on a competitor's site directly. If they're weak on fundamentals you're strong on, that's a real opportunity; if they're ahead, it tells you where you're behind regardless of content quality.

Decide what's actually worth matching

Not every competitor tactic is worth copying. A competitor might rank for a term because they've spent years building authority in a niche you don't operate in, or because of a business relationship you can't replicate. The useful output of competitor analysis is a short list of gaps that are realistically closeable for your business, not a full copy of their content plan.

How often to actually do this

Quarterly is usually enough for most small businesses — competitor rankings don't shift dramatically month to month, and doing this too often just produces noise without new decisions to make.
